No Man’s Land Design explores the potential for interspecies collaboration in the planning and design of our shared, more-than-human landscapes. We work to understand the complex relationship between the human-built environment and the natural systems it is designed to obstruct, obscure and control. Our attention is focused on the places where we find evidence of nature pushing back, reclaiming spaces and resources as it deliberately unbuilds the built environment. These cracks in the concrete are sites of historical misalignment and future possibility. No Man’s Land Design is asking ‘How can we help?’
No Man’s Land Design is a research landscape architecture studio based in Portland, Maine. We focus on experimental projects that translate theory and environmental ethics into design practice, testing collaborative frameworks for overlooked opportunities and evaluating potential outcomes for environmental and social impacts.
We are launching this Substack space as a platform to share our thinking, writing and research into these questions. Most posts will be written by Ann Kearsley, founder and owner of NMLD, but we hope to welcome guest posters as the work develops. Our intention is to post a few times a month, but it’s early days and we look forward to the evolution of this effort.

I look forward to what promises to be a quality publication!
